amazon shares hit a record high monday, pushing its market cap above $3 trillion for the first time. the stock rose about 4%, its best day since may 5, following a strong second-quarter earnings report.

amazon reported adjusted eps of $1.97 versus $1.82 expected, and revenue of $200.61 billion versus $196.47 billion. aws revenue came in at $42.2 billion, well above streetaccount's $40.54 billion forecast. the company also raised its capex guidance to $220 billion for the year, up from the $200 billion projected in february, citing rising memory prices tied to ai buildout.

ceo andy jassy said even that level won't be enough to meet demand in 2026 or 2027, and called the demand for 2028 'striking.' cloud rivals also saw big growth: microsoft azure revenue rose 43% in its fiscal fourth quarter, while google cloud grew 82% last week.

why it matters: amazon's record valuation and capex increase show ai demand remains a powerful growth engine for cloud and tech stocks.
