China’s reported chip breakthrough comes with some big caveats

asml's stock fell tuesday after a report that china is mass-producing immersion duv lithography machines, a tool asml has long dominated. the decline came amid a global semiconductor sell-off, with asml down 1.8% but still up 123% year-to-date.

analysts told cnbc to take the news with a pinch of salt. while a chinese firm has reportedly started manufacturing these machines, there are big caveats. yield — the number of usable chips — is a key concern; a homegrown duv machine may not match asml's yield, hampering adoption. scaling is another issue: the chinese firm aims for 5 units this year and 20 in 2027, while asml plans capacity of 130 duv immersion machines in 2026. asml is also restricted from selling some duv tools to china due to export controls, so any local production displaces revenue already lost.

as for extreme ultraviolet lithography (euv), which is used for leading-edge chips from apple and nvidia, analysts say china's duv progress doesn't mean it will crack euv. asml spent roughly two decades and $10 billion to make euv viable, and euve remains out of reach for china for now.

why it matters: reports of china's duv production raise questions about asml's monopoly but analysts see limited near-term impact due to yield and scaling hurdles.
