disney and tiktok have struck a deal letting creators use clips from disney films and shows, including star wars, toy story, and marvel titles, in their videos. the scheme launches in the us first, then rolls out elsewhere. no financial details were shared, but it follows the collapse of a $1bn disney-openai deal in march when openai shut down its sora video tool.

creators posting such clips previously risked copyright takedowns. tiktok says its platform saw 6.5 million film and tv posts per day last year. disney's chief marketing officer asad ayaz said fans are now celebrating stories in new ways, while social media expert matt navarra called it a profound shift: "hollywood used to market at fans - now it needs to give fans the raw materials to market with it."

clips will also be shared on disney's short-form video platform verts, launched in the us in march. analysts note risks around european safety rules and the need for guardrails, but the deal gives disney a foothold in user-generated content after the sora collapse.

why it matters: disney's tiktok deal signals a shift from controlling content to enabling fan remixes, betting on creator-driven reach.
